Hello,
I support legalization and regulation of marijuana.

As a parent, I think we should focus on education about drug use, and encourage young people to make smart, informed decisions about marijuana.  But at the same time, I don’t think it makes sense to saddle someone with a criminal record because they were caught in possession of a small amount of pot.

Frankly, the current drug laws have failed to prevent the use or sale of marijuana.  The failed prohibition of marijuana has exhausted countless billions of dollars spent on ineffective or incomplete enforcement and has resulted in unnecessary and expensive congestion in our judicial system.  To me, it seems clear that a new approach is needed.

Yours truly,

Geoff Regan, M.P.

The key point of this issue is simply this.

"It is like government is saying vitiman C is a drug for scurvy but oranges have not been proven safe or effective for scurvy in any country in the world."

(last part of the forum post)

Efficacy
One Ingredient has been approved and given a DIN and NOC for quite some time and that is THC. The drug is Marinol. So since THC is in cannabis, that chemical is effective therefore the plant is effective. Another Drug called Sativex has a DIN 02266121. Sativex is actually "hash oil" or more appropriatly cannabis oil. Those compounds are found in cannabis therefore cannabis has at least two effective ingredients in it (thc/cbd). It is like government is saying vitiman C is a drug for scurvy but oranges have not been proven safe or effective for scurvy in any country in the world.

Safety
A federal program called the Canadian Vigiliance program has been monitering the effects of adverse drug reactions by ways of database. I requested a copy of anything relating to cannabis and they sent me this http://www.mmadstories.ca/uploads/11-10 ... -05-20.pdf. Since 1965 only two patients/doctors have reported adverse drug reactions where cannabis is the suspect note: they were taking other drugs at the same time.

Please forward this e-mail as a response to the Health Ministers letter and ask again for a Drug Identification Number for Cannabis. Her response was mediocore at best.

Dear Health Minister my most important issue is that the Provincial health care says that they only approve drugs with a Drug Identification Number as cannabis can not be given a Drug Identification Number or at the very least patients are about 10 years from getting cannabis to have a Drug Identification Number then you are either responsible for making it possible for cannabis to be given a Drug Identification Number or mandating that provincial health cover it for the people who need it for for the medical purpose of the holder despite a drug identification number stating in a letter that it is approved under the MMAR for medical purposes. To say it is not approved under the FDA when it is approved under the MMAR is sidestepping the issue and causing patients much suffering (can not afford their medicine) and you have the power to help.
