Thank you for your correspondence.  You have certainly put as great deal of thought and experience into your draft Bill on Cannabis (repeal of prohibition).

As you know this issue is generating a great deal of interest on the Hill and the government has signaled its possible intention in this area.

Recently Sen Eggleton sponsored an open caucus meeting on the issue.

Senator Eggleton and I are respectively Deputy Chair and Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology (SAST).  It is possible that any legislation could be sent to SAST for review and recommendation to Senate.  As such it would be improper for me to sponsor legislation that might be sent to SAST for review.

So in the first instance I ask that you remove my name from your records and any further drafts related to this legislation.

It is possible that Sen Eggleton may be aware of other possible sponsors of legislation in this area.

This is an issue that has full public attention and I look forward to the debate unfolding and around specific draft legislation.

In summary I want to acknowledge your very thoughtful and informed efforts and wish you well as you pursue the objective of legislation.

Attached is an updated PDF copy of my own independent Bill ‘S-987 Repeal Cannabis Prohibition’ I have taken the liberty of drafting which I encourage Members of Parliament and the Senate to adopt and sponsor.  This draft text was created with the help of the greater cannabis community.   At this point, i’m not asking for you to sponsor this Bill, but to provide input to make it better.  Also, should the Bill be revised to become 2 separate Bills?
