Sam,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me with your support for the legalization of marijuana. I appreciate your interest and am heartened to see your participation in this historic conversation. I quite enjoyed reading your proposed bill – especially the element where it would be called “C-420” – and the different aspects of editing the laws currently on the books.

My first priority – and that of the Liberal Government – is to protect Canadians’ public health and public safety. We recognize that the current system is broken, and we have committed to working with health and safety experts from across the country to implement a new, more effective plan.

As the Minister of Health, Jane Philpott, has said “we will introduce legislation in the sSpring of 2017 that ensures we keep marijuana out of the hands of children and profits out of the hands of criminals.” In the coming weeks, the Government will launch a task force that will provide expert advice on how the legalization process should take place; it will include perspectives from many different sectors, including health, justice, law enforcement, and public safety.

Thank you again for writing to me on this important matter. I encourage you to continue the conversation and reach out again on any issue of concern.

Sincerely,

Kent Hehr, MP
Calgary Centre

"Kent Hehr, Calgary Centre MP and veterans affairs minister in Trudeau’s cabinet, said the Liberal government intends to move “relatively quickly” on the file.

He said the majority of people he’s heard from are in favour of the move, but the Calgary lawyer acknowledges some concerns have been raised by Albertans about the pledge.

“They’re mostly worried about kids and access to marijuana. Well, legalizing it ensures that it’s more difficult to get,” Hehr said.

“Legalizing it makes it a regulated product, make it controlled, gets criminals out of the business … and as an added bonus, the government can raise a little revenue,” he added.

“We’re going to be working on this aggressively.”

Hello NORML,
I am the candidate for Calgary Centre for the Liberals and somehow wires were crossed when you sent an email our way about our position on marijuana legalization.

I want to inform you that I am 100% in favour of this long overdue change. Here is a quote you can use on the website:

“Marijuana legalization is just good public policy. Our current approach just isn’t protecting our kids, we need to protect the vulnerable, and we need to respect people’s freedoms.”

Kindest regards,
Kent
