Members of Parliament - Social Media Checklist
For the current Members of Parliament, here is a checklist of things that need to be done, in order to keep up with the latest changes in technology.
Many Members of Parliament have already done this, so it can be a matter as simple as checking out other MPs websites and Social media presence. This list is the combined efforts of MPs who have already done this.
YouTube
Every MP should have video of their talks in Parliament, as well as special messages to constituents, and any time a public speaking event is done, it should be recorded and uploaded to YouTube.
YouTube gives the option to merge the Google+ account, so then your videos will show up each time you upload to your channel, as well as be available when visitors check your Google+ account.
YouTube also gives you the option to integrate your Twitter account, as well as your Facebook page, editing the profile is easy.
Commenting. Please allow for viewers to comment on your videos, and take time to respond back to comments when questions are asked. The viewers of the videos will appreciate this feedback.
Google+ Account
Google is constantly changing, so it's important to keep up with these changes.
Profile Picture. Google+ gives the option to include a Circle profile picture. (using an existing photo).
Creating a post is the same as done on Facebook, and links are useful.

For
thousands of years, until 1883, hemp was the world’s largest
agricultural crop, from which the majority of fiber, fabric, soap,
lighting oil, paper, incense, and medicines were produced. In addition,
it was a primary source of essential food oil and protein for humans and
animals. Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids necessary for
health. The oil from hemp seeds has the highest percentage of essential fatty acids and the lowest percentage of saturated fats. An acre of hemp produces more paper than an acre of trees. Paper made from hemp lasts for centuries, compared to 25-80 years for paper made from wood pulp. The US Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. Industrial hemp contains less than 1% of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana (which is also called cannabis). Trying to get high on industrial hemp is akin to trying to get drunk on non-alcohol beer. Hemp was forced from the market in the late 19th century by a campaign launched by newspaper magnates who also held controlling shares in the paper mill and cotton industry. It remains as one of the most scandalous yet least spoken about examples of fraud in world history. In 1937, Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act which effectively halted hemp production in the United States. It was briefly overridden during the Second World War when overseas supplies dried up but the campaign, called Hemp For Victory, was quickly withdrawn after the war. Hemp can be grown in virtually any climate or soil condition, and grows extremely fast, yielding up to 4 crops a year. Canada, China and France are major hemp producers. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp. Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper. But today the United States is the only industrial country in the world where the growing of hemp is prohibited. ~ Tom Retterbush Sources & Resources Hemp and Sustainability http:// Hemp Paper, the Ecofriendly Paper. http:// Hemp: An Alternative Fiber for Making Paper http://forestry.about.com/ Environmental and Economic Benefits of Hemp http://www.nemeton.com/ The Sustainability of Tree Paper vs. Hemp Paper (PDF) |

Mr. Speaker, in my role as Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, I find myself spending a lot of time in the beautiful city of Vancouver, and I know my colleague opposite represents a riding there. However, one of the issues I hear about outside my economic portfolio is the issue of the marijuana dispensaries that are operating illegally in British Columbia right now and in other cities in the country.
The fact is that they are operating illegally, and since my colleague opposite represents a riding in a city where this is a big issue for many people, I am wondering if she could give her thoughts on the marijuana dispensaries that are operating illegally in the city right now.

Legalization

The students in favour of changing the laws were reportedly asked to sit in one section of the room, while those opposed were asked to sit in another. While the majority of students were strongly opposed, Reid sat with the pro-legalization crowd.
Reid later told the crowd that he views drug policies in North America as illogical and inconsistent, Frontenac News reports.
"I've never smoked marijuana, or cigarettes, but I favour legalization," Reid said.
The MP also seemed to downplay the idea that marijuana is dangerous.
"The most significant gateway drug is cigarettes, and the drug that does the most damage is alcohol, and they are both legal, and should be in my view," he said.
Reid admitted his stance differs from the Conservative Party, which has toughened penalties for pot possession.
"I was the only one in my party who voted against that legislation," he said.

Hello,
I support legalization and regulation of marijuana.
As a parent, I think we should focus on education about drug use, and encourage young people to make smart, informed decisions about marijuana. But at the same time, I don’t think it makes sense to saddle someone with a criminal record because they were caught in possession of a small amount of pot.
Frankly, the current drug laws have failed to prevent the use or sale of marijuana. The failed prohibition of marijuana has exhausted countless billions of dollars spent on ineffective or incomplete enforcement and has resulted in unnecessary and expensive congestion in our judicial system. To me, it seems clear that a new approach is needed.
Yours truly,
Geoff Regan, M.P.

MP Geoff Regan asks Health Minister to give cannabis a DIN
by David Shea » Thu Mar 31, 2011 6:46 am

(last part of the forum post)
Efficacy
One Ingredient has been approved and given a DIN and NOC for quite some time and that is THC. The drug is Marinol. So since THC is in cannabis, that chemical is effective therefore the plant is effective. Another Drug called Sativex has a DIN 02266121. Sativex is actually "hash oil" or more appropriatly cannabis oil. Those compounds are found in cannabis therefore cannabis has at least two effective ingredients in it (thc/cbd). It is like government is saying vitiman C is a drug for scurvy but oranges have not been proven safe or effective for scurvy in any country in the world.
Safety
A federal program called the Canadian Vigiliance program has been monitering the effects of adverse drug reactions by ways of database. I requested a copy of anything relating to cannabis and they sent me this http://www.mmadstories.ca/uploads/11-10 ... -05-20.pdf. Since 1965 only two patients/doctors have reported adverse drug reactions where cannabis is the suspect note: they were taking other drugs at the same time.
Please forward this e-mail as a response to the Health Ministers letter and ask again for a Drug Identification Number for Cannabis. Her response was mediocore at best.
Dear Health Minister my most important issue is that the Provincial health care says that they only approve drugs with a Drug Identification Number as cannabis can not be given a Drug Identification Number or at the very least patients are about 10 years from getting cannabis to have a Drug Identification Number then you are either responsible for making it possible for cannabis to be given a Drug Identification Number or mandating that provincial health cover it for the people who need it for for the medical purpose of the holder despite a drug identification number stating in a letter that it is approved under the MMAR for medical purposes. To say it is not approved under the FDA when it is approved under the MMAR is sidestepping the issue and causing patients much suffering (can not afford their medicine) and you have the power to help.

Mr. Speaker, I thank the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health for his good work on the health files and for his interest with respect to addictions.
As I indicated, with
respect to the production of scheduled drugs, such as cannabis and
marijuana, which is what I think the member for Western Arctic was most concerned about, aggravating factors have to be present.
Those aggravating
factors, as I indicated, would be that the person used real property
that belonged to a third party to commit the offence; the production
constituted a potential security, health or safety hazard to children
who were in the location where the offence was committed or in the
immediate area; the production constituted a potential public safety
hazard in a residential area where the person placed or set a trap.
With respect to
trafficking, often rental properties are converted into grow operations.
When those grow operations are dismantled by law enforcement, or simply
because of the amount of electricity and humidity that are required to
grow cannabis--I have read about this; I do not have any direct
experience--often there is serious damage to the drywall and often to
the structural foundation. When there is damage to real property, that
is an aggravating factor that causes the aggravating sentence provisions
to kick in.
Just to clarify, possession is not punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence; it is possession for the purposes of trafficking.

Illicit Drugs
Statements By Members
November 18th, 2005 / 11:05 a.m.
Conservative
Concerned citizens have come together to form a community drug action committee. I met with some committee members last week in Mayor Greg Krischke's office. They asked that the federal government do the following: first, institute mandatory minimum prison sentences for drug trafficking; second, empower our police men and women to fight the growing problem of crystal meth by enabling them to deal with the materials that are the precursors of this harmful drug; third, institute mandatory treatment for a minimum of three months as a part of sentencing; fourth, withdraw the legislation dealing with marijuana currently before Parliament; and fifth, provide adequate resources for policing in communities like Leduc to properly deal with the problems caused by illicit drugs.
On their behalf, I call upon the federal government to take their concerns and their suggestions seriously and to work with them to fulfill their vision of making Leduc a drug aware and drug resistant community.

James Rajotte
Edmonton—Leduc, AB
Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize and applaud the efforts
of the city of Leduc in uniting to address challenges posed by drug use
and drug trafficking in its community.Concerned citizens have come together to form a community drug action committee.

The Conservative party's response to Justin Trudeau's speech. The comment is to be attributed to Transport Minister Lisa Raitt.
"As Justin Trudeau spends his weekend discussing ways to raise taxes and legalize marijuana, our Conservative government will continue to focus on creating jobs for Canadians.
Justin Trudeau has had all weekend to outline a clear plan for jobs and the economy, and instead has only showcased his ideas that increase spending, raise taxes, hurt growth and put us in deficit.
We expect no less from someone who believes the budget will balance itself."

John Rafferty, MP - Thunder Bay—Rainy River
http://www.parl.gc.ca/Parliamentarians/en/members/John-Rafferty(30467)
John Rafferty thinks it’s time the marijuana question hit the national headlines.
The Thunder Bay-Rainy River NDP MP on Monday said Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s revelation that he’d used pot five or six times – most recently three years ago while a member of the House of Commons – was a good excuse to spark the debate about the country’s marijuana laws.
In his opinion, Canada has three options.
“One is the laws remain the same. There is a middle ground, decriminalization; and then going all the way to legalize it,” Rafferty said.
“The Liberal point of view is they can tax it and control it if they legalize it. My own opinion has always been that it should be decriminalized. I don’t really think people should be in jail. I think there are alternatives and we continue to look at that in the NDP.”
Rafferty said essentially the decision comes down to economics.
“Is there a cost-benefit to doing that? That’s one thing to look at, aside from the fact that people are going to jail that maybe shouldn’t be in jail.”
Asked if he used the drug, the 60-year-old Rafferty said he does not, but made it clear he might have had past encounters with pot.
“I don’t smoke marijuana, but I did grow up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, so maybe that’s a good enough answer for you,” he said.
