I want to hone in on the notion, which some would have us believe, that someone who is convicted of six months in jail or more is not a serious criminal. The claim is that if a teenager is found with a bit of marijuana he will be severely impacted by this bill, which, by the way, I think is very appropriately named the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act. I heard a lot about this bill from my constituents after your announcement, Minister, and I can tell you every single person who has spoken to me has been very favourable, and I represent one of the most diverse constituencies in this country.

MP Costas Menegakis congratulates York Regional Police for major illicit drug seizure

....“The risks of using illegal drugs, including marijuana or cannabis, are far-reaching and can have serious consequences on the health and future of young people,” said MP Menegakis. “The evidence showing that the use of cannabis early in adolescence, while the brain is still developing, may lead to more lasting, irreparable problems is particularly alarming. Our government has no tolerance for the production and trafficking of illicit drugs and I am proud of our landmark crime legislation, The Safe Streets and Communities Act that was enacted to address the serious problem of organized drug crime.”
“In contrast, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau advocates for the legalization of marijuana and for making it more easily available to youth,” said MP Menegakis. “The simple fact is that marijuana is illegal because of the serious consequences on its users and on society. While our government is focused on providing law enforcement the tools they need to keep our communities safe, Mr. Trudeau is undermining the important work of our police services with his ill-thought out comments. Clearly, Mr. Trudeau is just in over his head.”
